Irrigation Australia and Launch into Work

Following our unsuccessful grant application for the federal government’s Building Women’s Careers program, we have been in discussion with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations about a smaller scale “Launch into Work” project with very similar themes and objectives – attempting to get more young women entering the industry, supported by mentors and with the backing of sound practical installation training. We expect to be seeking interest from prospective employers in early May.

New Waterwise Action Plan launched to enhance climate resilience in Perth and Peel

Former Water Minister Simone McGurk has launched Kep Katitjin - Gabi Kaadadjan, the third Waterwise Action Plan for Perth and Peel, aimed at building climate resilience and transforming the region into a leading Waterwise community by 2030.

The Waterwise Program, a cornerstone of the State’s climate action efforts, has helped Western Australians save approximately 24 billion litres of water since 2019. This includes one billion litres of residential water savings, 23 billion litres in non-residential water savings, and the support of urban greening with over 10,000 trees and nearly 300,000 waterwise plants.

The third Waterwise Action Plan introduces eight new initiatives and continues 35 actions, all geared toward addressing challenges related to climate change, population growth, and urbanisation. This plan not only targets Perth and Peel but also explores expanding the Waterwise Program to regional urban centres, recognising the distinct water needs of these communities.

The Waterwise Action Plan, delivered by 11 State Government agencies in collaboration with local governments, businesses, and community organisations, recently received national recognition, winning the Organisational Excellence Award at the Australian Water Awards.

For more details on this impactful program, visit the Kep Katitjin - Gabi Kaadadjan Waterwise Action Plan 3 website.

Donald Punch appointed as Western Australia’s new Minister for Water

In a recent Cabinet reshuffle, Premier Roger Cook announced the appointment of Hon. Donald (Don) Punch MLA as Western Australia's new Minister for Water. This move is part of the Cook Government's strategy to bolster its leadership team and address the state's evolving needs.

Don Punch brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Since 2017, he has served as the Member for Bunbury in the Legislative Assembly, representing the Australian Labor Party. His previous ministerial responsibilities include Regional Development, Disability Services, Fisheries, Seniors and Ageing, and Volunteering. Minister Punch's extensive background in regional development and public service positions him well to tackle the challenges and opportunities in Western Australia's water sector.

The new Cabinet, including Minister Punch, was officially sworn in at a ceremony at Government House on March 19, 2025.

Manning pump station transformed by vibrant community mural

A once-drab wastewater pump station in Manning has been transformed into a striking public mural as part of Water Corporation's Splash of Colour program. Unveiled by Water Minister Don Punch, the artwork was created by Como artist Jordan Andreotta in collaboration with Year 4 students from Manning Primary School, who contributed ideas based on water conservation and the local environment.

The mural features willie wagtails and eucalyptus blossoms, with blue tones representing the nearby Canning River. The project is part of a broader initiative under the Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2, with over 70 water assets across WA now sporting public art to celebrate local water stories and promote sustainable water use.
