3. Irrigation Australia students shine

If there’s one thing which unites the Irrigation Australia team it’s a passion for our students and commitment to a quality training experience. We’ve had many fantastic students over the years but 2025 represents the first time we’ve had the opportunity to try to celebrate some of our many great achievers through nominations for state training awards.

Choosing students to nominate was tough with so many great candidates, and there may be a couple more from other states if we can get approvals in place. However, for now, we are very proud   to announce the nomination of D’Artagnan Flattery-Donohoe (better known as “Nuggy”) for the Queensland state training awards.

Currently working at Project Pumps as a foreman, Nuggy completed the requirements for his Certificate III in March this year. He is a highly respected team leader who has worked extensively to improve company policies including health and safety, and transfer the knowledge gained from his training.

Best of luck to Nuggy in progressing through the stages – we should hear something around May initially if he is a finalist with regional finals in July. Then onto the Australian Training Awards in November!

At Irrigation Australia we aim to deliver world-class training, on-demand learning, and recognised certification - because professionals deserve the tools to succeed. This isn’t just about irrigation. It's about leadership, purpose, and being the expert the industry needs.

It’s a great time to get involved – click here for current training opportunities.

11. Training progression in the irrigation industry: From entry level learning to recognised qualification

There’s a growing list of ways to gain skills in the irrigation industry – but with all these options can comes confusion. What’s a micro-credential? Where do short courses fit in? And how do skill set’s link to formal qualifications? There are many questions we have when considering career pathways.

To clear things up, here’s a simple guide to how informal and formal training options connect and can help in creating real pathways to a career in the Irrigation Industry.

Informal Learning

This is the starting point for many entry-level workers with learning experiences often set up on-site or during day-to-day activities. It can include:

  • Toolbox talks – recurring sessions where new product or services are often introduced
  • Mentoring – workplace mentors guiding and helping each day
  • On-the-job learning – undertaking new activities under the guidance and supervision of those more experienced in the industry.

While informal training isn’t recognised with a certificate, it builds important experience and awareness that supports more structured learning down the track.

Short Courses / Non-accredited Workshops

These are focused training sessions that often respond to industry needs or seasonal skill gaps. They can include:

  • Micro-credentials (e.g. digital badge programs)
  • Workplace safety workshops
  • Detailed product sessions relevant to a particular industry need

Some courses are endorsed by industry and may offer a digital badge, but they may not be nationally accredited. However, they’re an excellent steppingstone for workers building towards more formal recognition.

Accredited Skill Sets

Skill sets are recognised under the AHC Training Package and are made up of one or more accredited units. These might be tailored toward specific industry roles such as:

  • Irrigation System Auditor
  • Irrigation Installer

They’re often used by employers to ensure workers meet specific competency requirements without undertaking a full qualification. Useful when scope of works details selected qualifications are needed.

Full Qualification (AQF Level 3–4)

This is where learners earn a nationally recognised qualification through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as Irrigation Australia (RTO #91313).

Examples include:

  • Certificate III in Irrigation Technology
  • Certificate IV in Irrigation Management

These qualifications align with AQF Level 3 and 4, supporting both hands-on technical roles and pathway options for supervisory or design-related careers.

Putting It All Together

Each layer of training has value. Whether it’s an informal chat at smoko or a formal Certificate IV, everything contributes to a more skilled, confident and recognised irrigation workforce.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) offers a valuable way to have all these learning experiences – formal and informal – acknowledged. RPL allows experienced workers to convert their knowledge and practical skills into accredited outcomes, reducing duplication and supporting career progression with evidence-based assessments.

So, wherever you are in your journey, remember, there’s a path forward, and every step counts.
