1. From the CEO

Greetings all and Happy New Year!

We’ve seen some pretty strong indicators of how challenging 2024 was for our industry with decreases in training enrolments, and the very many stories of being too busy and short staffed.

Every challenge creates an opportunity, and it all gives us a chance to critically review how we do things. Some new training software and some new/ revised training courses including the popular Certified Irrigation Installer and Pumps and Systems are ready to go now. We have a new online introduction to irrigation offering in the final throes of testing along with a Certified Meter Installer recertification examination to provide a further CPD option expected to be ready early February.

We see the Irrigation Installer course and certification as a critical step in career paths and addressing skilling and attraction challenges and are prioritising delivery as a result. The first couple of courses have received overwhelming positive feedback.

With the support of the WA regional committee we were able to pull together a major federal funding application for the region in November. While it could be a couple of months before we find out the result (and it might not work), it’s worth talking about the intent because the underpinning issues aren’t going away any time soon and as an industry we need to look for every opportunity to try different things to address them.

The Building Womens’ Careers program is a $60M+ one-off investment by the federal government which will fund partnership projects “to advance structural and cultural change to improve womens’ access to flexible, safe and inclusive training and work opportunities in the key male-dominated industries.” Our application is based around the challenges in an ageing workforce and generally attracting and retaining staff in urban irrigation/ landscape construction – something which is perhaps heightened in WA thanks to the need to compete with the resources sectors for skills.

It proposes the identification of industry mentors – both male and female – to support the introduction of 60+ new young women into irrigation over the 3 year life of the program. If successful it would not specifically fund employment, but is fundamentally intended to drive a stronger approach to diversity in the industry in the region, and would cover as a minimum the Certified Irrigation Installer skill set for participants.

We have reviewed all known available government funding opportunities to provide additional financial support members with training etc. with a number of other applications lodged nationally.

Irrigation Australia released its new careers website last year and new and refined content is being continuously added. We’ve started a webinar series with the support of the Australian Department of Employment and Workplace Relations with more to come in early 2025, have started building the profile of the industry through national resources including myfuture.edu.au and are aiming to see industry co-investment with a big focus on careers in 2025 through Irrigation Futures. I’m keen to hear from any members with a passion to help drive initiatives to help address our employment challenges – either through initiatives like the subject of the grant application above or skills working groups we are aiming to establish soon.

We expect to re-start the Certification webinars from March as there is plenty happening in that space to report and by the time you have read this will have completed our first “Customer Reference Group” session on 16 January – targeting exhibitors and other industry supporters to get feedback on our services, including events going forward.

Finally, keep an eye in your inbox over the next couple of weeks as we start the 2025 membership drive. We will be implementing a CPI increase shortly, but will offer existing members who elect to pay their subscriptions early the chance to access the current rates.

Here’s to a prosperous 2025 for our members and the Association.

My door is always open for new ideas and the industry has a great track record of collaboration – I look forward to getting some new and innovative projects up this year to make a difference and delivering plenty of quality training.

10. One size does not fill all: Introduction to training delivery styles

In vocational education and training (VET), one size does not fit all those who participate. Different training delivery styles exist to assist those with diverse needs, their preferences for learning, and the individual and sometimes changing circumstances of learners. People come from a variety of backgrounds, with varying levels of experience, learning styles, and life commitments. Training must reflect this diversity to be effective in achieving positive outcomes for all.

For example, face-to-face learning appeals to those who thrive in structured environments with direct interaction, while online delivery suits individuals seeking flexibility to balance work, family, or other commitments. Workplace-based training is ideal for hands-on learners who prefer applying skills in real-world settings, and self-paced learning supports those who like to control the speed of their education.

These options ensure that training remains inclusive, engaging, and accessible, helping learners achieve their qualifications and career goals in a way that works best for them. Whether you're looking for the convenience of online learning, the collaboration of group sessions, or the practical focus of on-the-job training, there's a style to suit every learner.

At Irrigation Australia Ltd (RTO 91313), we offer blended training options to meet the diverse needs of the Australian irrigation industry across rural and urban markets. While it can be difficult in our industry to demonstrate skills when isolated from training facilities and venues, there are options available to assist an experienced industry worker meet training outcome requirements. All, while maintaining and upholding the rules of evidence and compliance to national training standards. Here is a list of training delivery styles that you may not be familiar with.

Types of Training Delivery

  • Face-to-Face Delivery: Traditional classroom learning with in-person interaction, ideal for hands-on and group activities.
  • Online Delivery: Flexible digital learning through live or self-paced platforms, accessible from anywhere.
  • Blended Delivery: Combines online and in-person training to balance flexibility with direct engagement.
  • Workplace-Based Training: Skills are taught on-site, integrating learning with real job tasks.
  • Simulated Environment Training: Controlled settings replicate workplace scenarios for practical learning.
  • Self-Paced Learning: Learners study independently, progressing at their own speed.
  • Group-Based Learning: Collaborative sessions encourage teamwork and shared learning experiences.
  • On-the-Job Training: Training happens during work, focusing on applying skills in real-time.Structured Workplace Learning: Planned training in a workplace aligned with formal study goals.Distance Learning: Remote training delivered via mail or non-digital formats for those without online access.
  • RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning): Acknowledges existing skills and experience to credit toward qualifications.
  • Accelerated Learning: Condensed training programs for learners with prior knowledge or industry experience.

11. Skills in Demand Visa and National Innovation Visa Webinars

As a part of reform measures outlined in the Migration Strategy, the Australian Government is introducing the National Innovation visa and changes to the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) (subclass 482) visa, which will be reformed and renamed as the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa. These changes will enable Australian business and industry to attract migrants who make a significant contribution to the Australian economy, and fill positions where no Australian workers are available.

The National Innovation Visa (NIV) will be a small, exclusive program with an increased focus on high-calibre talented migrants. The NIV is aimed at established and emerging leaders to ensure Australia attracts migrants from across the world who will help create jobs and drive investment in key sectors of the Australian economy.

The new Skills in Demand (SID) visa provides a streamlined pathway for skilled migrants, promoting worker mobility while offering a simple process for employers to access the skilled workers they need to help their businesses to grow.

The Department of Home Affairs invites you to attend an online information session to learn more about these two new visa programs. Click here to register for an online information session.
