1. CEO Update
So apparently, it’s December and this is the last planned e-news for the year. I am not quite sure what happened to 2024 but know that everyone on our team has put in a massive effort for members this year, and all deserve their break in a few weeks.
Our AGM was completed a couple of weeks ago and we now have a new, streamlined Constitution. We thanked Paul Smith as a retiring director and welcomed Lucy Wilson onto our board. We reported on the year’s activities including the big push to re-establish strong regional committees, with the recent meeting for NSW bringing us up to five active regions.
My main focus for the last month or so has been on trying to target government investment opportunities to support training opportunities for members and I expect we will be able to promote some early wins in the new year. There have been two fairly major grant applications lodged including for a federal program supporting building womens’ careers in irrigation, based in WA, but I’ll save reporting further until we know whether it’s been successful or not.
The most common issue we hear members raise is the industry’s skills crisis – how hard it’s becoming to attract and retain good staff and be generally competitive in the employment market. Careers was always identified as a major program as part of our Irrigation Futures initiative and will be the Association’s major focus for 2025, building on resources already developed including the Irrigation Careers website. We’ve kicked things off recently with a fantastic webinar from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations – check out item 2 below.
Unfortunately thanks to a rent hike we’ve been forced to re-evaluate our office space in Brisbane and are expecting to move in the next couple of months. The top option includes some warehouse space and suits our purposes better, and is not too far away at Murarrie, so there will be little disruption to customers.
December to mid-January is obviously a quieter time for training and Sam’s team is taking advantage of that to get our new, flash system in Ammonite running and ready for the new year.
While it’s still a few weeks away on behalf of our board and staff I’d like to extend our best wishes to all member and stakeholders for a restful festive break. It is the time of the year when we talk about extremes in weather, so I hope you all stay safe.
My wish for Santa is that everyone who can enrols in some of the great upcoming training opportunities to help us catch up after a slow couple of months, but you also look for other ways to get involved with the Association as we move into our next phase of enhanced regional engagement and inclusivity.
2. From Fields to Futures: Webinar recording now available
Last week’s From Fields to Futures – Growing Your Workforce – Support, Strategies and Incentives webinar, hosted by the Australian Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) on 27 November, saw a fantastic turnout!
Sandee Harris shared valuable insights into national skills shortages, departmental support services, and hiring incentives. For those short on time, the presentation slides offer a wealth of information, including a comprehensive list of useful links at the end. These resources cover recruitment support, Apprentice Connect Australia Providers, and tools to help you rethink workforce development strategies.
The department’s support has been instrumental in helping Irrigation Australia explore new opportunities to create a strategic approach to career development for the industry.
If you missed the webinar or want to revisit key points, the recording is now available here.
We are currently looking into more webinar topics to progress our focus for 2025 on careers for the industry.

7. Navigating seasonal stress in a changing industry
In the Australian irrigation industry, seasonal demand hits like clockwork. As the temperatures rise and water management becomes critical, the workload intensifies. But for many in the industry - whether installers, pump technicians, retail workers or business owners - this seasonal surge isn’t just about managing tasks; it’s about managing the emotional toll of a workforce stretched too thin.
The challenge of finding trained, experienced, and willing workers magnifies the stress. For those on the frontlines, this creates a perfect storm of pressure, fatigue, and mental strain. So how do we adapt and protect our mental health during these demanding months?
The Mental Load of Seasonal Work
Increased seasonal demand isn’t just about physical labour; it brings a mental load that can be overwhelming. Workers often feel the pressure to “just push through,” especially in outdoor jobs where grit and endurance are valued. But ignoring the psychological impact can lead to burnout, resentment, and even safety risks.
For employers, the lack of experienced or willing workers means relying on fewer hands to do more work. This often translates into longer hours, rushed training, and heightened stress across the board. It's a system ripe for mistakes and mental exhaustion.
The Impact of Change Fatigue
Borrowing from the classic metaphor in *Who Moved My Cheese? *, the irrigation industry is navigating a maze of change. From fluctuating labour availability to evolving technology and climate conditions, workers and businesses alike must adapt. This change fatigue can drain even the most resilient teams. Without a clear end in sight, uncertainty exacerbates anxiety and stress. Workers may find themselves questioning their roles or career paths.
Strategies to Build Resilience
So how do we keep the mental health of our teams intact during seasonal surges? It starts with recognising mental health as a foundation for performance, safety, and satisfaction.
1. Foster Open Communication
- Make mental health a part of regular conversations. When leaders acknowledge stress and offer support, it reduces stigma and fosters a culture of care.
- Provide clear expectations about workloads and encourage workers to speak up when they’re overwhelmed.
2. Prioritise Training and Support
- While there may be a lack of experienced workers - offering targeted, hands-on training can empower new hires and reduce the mental load for everyone.
- Assign mentors to guide less experienced workers, building confidence and teamwork.
3. Promote Work-Life Balance
- Encourage breaks, proper hydration, and realistic hours, even during peak demand. A well-rested worker is a safer and more effective one.
- Aknowledge extra effort with rewards or incentives to boost morale.
4. Mental Health First Aid
- Equip managers and team leaders with Mental Health First Aid training. This ensures they can recognise early signs of stress and intervene before it escalates.
Moving the Cheese Together
In the irrigation industry, the cheese will always move - demand will spike, labour shortages will persist, and change will remain constant. But by addressing mental health as a priority, we can navigate the maze together.A resilient workforce adapts to stress, ensuring the industry is ready for the next seasonal surge - not just with tools but with the mental strength to thrive. Do yourself a favour, add a copy of the book to your library and share it around.
The book *Who Moved My Cheese? * by Spencer Johnson uses a metaphorical story to explore how individuals respond to change. Set in a maze symbolising life, the characters - two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two tiny humans, Hem and Haw - represent different approaches to adapting when "cheese" (a metaphor for goals or success) is moved. The narrative underscores the importance of recognising the inevitability of change, adapting quickly, and moving forward with new opportunities. Reference: Johnson, S. (1998). *Who Moved My Cheese? An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life*. Putnam Adult.
