2. Member Update: City of Cockburn - Dockers vs Adelaide

The first preseason AFL match Fremantle Dockers V Adelaide Crows was held at Victor George Kalis Oval in Cockburn Central

Friday 24 February 2023. This is the Dockers training ground and haven’t had a game to this scale there before (only intraclub matches).

This was a joint partnership between Fremantle Dockers and City of Cockburn

Programmed property services are responsible for the maintenance of the oval.

The oval was match prepared and looking great for the game including Fremantle Dockers and Cockburn logos painted onto the turf.

The game was filmed and available to watch on Kayo.

The style of game was adjusted for preseason conditions being played in six 25 minute periods plus one 20 minute period.

A huge number of spectators came to the ground to watch the game with the crowd favouring the home side.

Adelaide nabbed the chocolates with the final score below.

Adelaide: 3.1 6.2 11.3 12.5 16.8 20.11 25.15 (165)

Fremantle: 4.3 6.5 8.5 10.6 10.8 11.9 14.9 (93)

4. New Regional Committee for Queensland

We are pleased to advise you that Irrigation Australia hosted a meeting with a small number of members from across the industry at the Brisbane office on 9th February to discuss resurrecting a working regional committee. The purpose of the committee is to represent the interests of the members. The primary purpose is to act as representatives from the industry at regional level, provide local industry intelligence and act as a communication link between the Board, Management and other industry stakeholders. Regional Committees are an important conduit to:

  • Underpin regional recognition of Irrigation Australia as the peak industry body through the development and maintenance of a professional, sustainable, ethical and accountable irrigation industry in regional Australia;
  • Provide feedback and guidance to IAL Management and Board on irrigation issues in regional Australia;
  • Promote the activities of Irrigation Australia in regional Australia including membership, training, certification and events.
  • Organise localised member events (such as; breakfasts, site tours, field days, expos)
  • Host regular committee meetings (face to face or teleconference)
  • Identify, recommend and schedule regional events of interest approved by Irrigation Australia and organised in conjunction with the National Membership & Regions Manager

The committee aims to support the state of Queensland as a whole over time. We are very pleased to introduce the volunteers to date:

  • Ben Chapman – Project Irrigation (Chair)
  • Clinton Hort – Rodney Industries
  • Mark Gordon – Davey
  • Russ Dunne – Bermad Water Technology
  • Peter Chadband – The Pumphouse
  • Chris Rehm – Think Water
  • Peter Morath – Total Water Services

Irrigation Australia is keen to hear from any of our members based in Queensland who are interested in supporting the industry through participation.

Please contact tracy.martin@irrigation.org.au if you wish to participate or discuss this further.

7. Training Update - Introduction of New Code of Practice for QLD workplaces

Like all QLD workplaces, Irrigation Australia has a requirement under section 274 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) to provide a safe workplace, so far as is reasonably practical. This extends to our employees, our visitors and includes those undertaking study with COIE.

WHS Act defines health to include both physical and psychological health. A new Code of Practice for Managing the risk of psychosocial hazards at work, Code of Practice 2022 comes into effect 1st April 2023. (Link below)

https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/laws-and-compliance/codes-of-practice/managing-the-risk-of-psychosocial-hazards-at-work-code-of-practice-2022

The importance of WHS policy and awareness should go without saying as much. However, it can often just become another document to sign and lives at the bottom of the “important” pile. At Irrigation Australia, our plans include distributing up to date information to staff and visitors through awareness and training, along with consultation and workplace resources.

Recently, Irrigation Australia staff attended an in-house awareness session on Mental Health delivered by one of our Certified Mental Health First Aiders. Highlighting how Irrigation Australia plans to adopt the new Code of Practice, examples of psychosocial hazards in the workplace were discussed, indicators of potential stress reviewed, and the 4-step consultation control process was introduced.
